A volleyball match usually lasts about 1 to 2 hours. A best-of-three match often takes about an hour, while a best-of-five match at high school varsity, college or pro level can run two hours or more if it goes the distance. Beach volleyball matches are shorter, averaging around 40 minutes at the top level. Volleyball has no game clock, so the length depends on how many sets are played and how close they are.
How volleyball matches are structured
“Game” can mean a single set or the whole match. Under the FIVB Official Volleyball Rules 2025–2028, a set is won by the first team to 25 points with at least a two-point lead, and the match goes to the first team to win three sets. If it’s 2–2, the fifth set is played to 15, still win by two. Each team gets two 30-second time-outs per set, and the break between sets is three minutes.
| Level | Format | Typical length |
|---|---|---|
| Pro and international indoor (FIVB) | Best of 5; sets to 25, fifth to 15 | About 1.5 to 2+ hours |
| US college (NCAA) | Best of 5; sets to 25, fifth to 15 | About 1.5 to 2+ hours |
| US high school varsity | Usually best of 5; state associations can choose best of 3 | About 1 to 2 hours |
| JV, middle school and club | Often best of 3; third set may go to 15 | About 45 to 90 minutes |
| Beach (FIVB) | Best of 3; sets to 21, third to 15 | Around 40 minutes on average |
These are typical ranges, not rules. A one-sided 3–0 sweep can be over in about an hour, while a close five-setter with long rallies, extended sets and video challenges can run well past two hours.
How long is a volleyball set?
An indoor set to 25 usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on how long the rallies are, how many time-outs are called and whether the set goes past 25. A fifth set to 15 is shorter.
What makes a match longer or shorter?
- Number of sets: a five-set match can take twice as long as a sweep.
- Extended sets: because you must win by two, sets can go to 26–24, 30–28 or beyond.
- Long rallies: strong defense means more digs and longer points.
- Stoppages: time-outs, substitutions, video challenges and TV breaks at pro level.
What the research says
A study of FIVB World Tour beach volleyball from 2000 to 2010 found matches averaged around 40 minutes, with 90% lasting between 30 and 64 minutes. The same paper cites earlier indoor research showing that average match length fell from about 96 minutes to about 67 after volleyball switched to rally scoring in 1999, when every rally began to score a point.
Planning a tournament day?
Club tournaments often mean several matches with long waits in between, so pack snacks, water and spare clothes. Our guide to volleyball bags includes a checklist of what to bring.
